Want to Turn Your Hobbies into Your Dream Job?— Here’s How
The first stop on the road to endless success
Written by Jake Levyns
If you ever gave thought to ways you can work for yourself in this tricky job market, you probably aren’t a stranger to the difficulties of getting your first break. Any work venture that requires you to plan out everything from investments all the way to publicity comes with a great deal of risk attached, but if you believe in the value of what you’re putting out, the process of convincing others of its merit will come more easily than anything. Also let’s not forget that time is of the essence, and if you feel like taking a chance on yourself could be the way past a fork in the road, you shouldn’t hesitate to get a move on as soon as you are able. Don’t overthink these starting points, especially if your desire to produce supersedes your ability to carry through with it.
Cast a wide net of all possible lanes that interest you
The most important thing to know about working for yourself is the first thing you should remember: don’t narrow your options until you know what suits you. After all, no one can tell you what interests you or force you to be interested in something you’re not, so instead of putting yourself in a box, try everything (or as much as you can manage) and see what sticks. You’ll be thankful to not have many constraints before you get too busy with the follow-through.
Save big investments for when you can support yourself
The last thing you want to do is stress out over things out of your control, like your disposable income in a pandemic. Right now, while you have the invaluable opportunity to try and fail at pretty much anything, don’t stress about the expenses you’ll need to make until you have your feet under you; that way, you know what is most sustainable for you in the short term and the long haul.
Don’t go into a project you won’t have fun making
To reiterate from earlier, if you believe in what you’ve given your time and energy to create, others will be more inclined to believe you. Self-preservation in an industry that hinges on people you don’t know interacting with your work is the hardest thing to master, so it’s no surprise how much easier it will be if you stay aware of the value it will have when it’s ready for mass consumption. Like anyone who yearns to make a connection with others knows: there is someone out there who needs to hear what you have to say, and you won’t know that for sure until you make way for yourself to begin.
