What it’s about: In this beginning piece to a new series, Bennett combines the intrigue of a good murder mystery with the lighthearted fun of a good chick flick. The novel begins with the death of a guest at one of Queen Elizabeth II’s dinner parties. After it is discovered the death was no accident, and that M15 just might be missing the mark on their investigation, the Queen decides to start her own. Deliciously fun and just a bit absurd (in the best way possible), this novel is sure to keep you on your toes until the very end.

If you love a classic retelling, read … Ladies of the House by Lauren Edmondson

What it’s about: This novel is a fresh new retelling of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. Perfect for fans of Bridgerton, it’s the best Austen retelling since Clueless. The novel takes off after two sisters discover their father has gotten into a pretty big scandal and, due to his very inconvenient death, has left them to deal with all the aftermath. Full of romance, scandal, and undertones of empowerment, this novel is sure to be your next favorite quick read.

If you’re looking for something a little more meaningful, read … Raceless by Georgina Lawton

What it’s about: Author Georgina Lawton combines her own experiences growing up as a black woman in a mostly white neighborhood as well as her experiences traveling to black communities to explore her racial background and create a discussion about the importance of self identity and how racial notions are constructed in different communities. This novel tackles the issue of the theory of being “colorblind” as well as delves into the universal theme of wanting to belong. Not only will reading this allow you to learn more about the psychology and sociology behind the concept of race it will also allow you to immerse yourself in the emotions and experiences of a woman who has directly dealt with the implications of these themes.

If you’re looking for a little positivity, read … My Inner Sky by Mari Andrew

A collection of essays and drawings all pertaining to different categories of the day (twilight, golden hour, night, and dawn), this novel explores the range of emotions we feel in our lifetime, both the good and the bad, and how to fully embrace them. Not only is this an aesthetically pleasing experience, you will gain inspiration to feel peace with your inner self, even when the outside world is hard to control.

If you love a little magic, read … Small Magic by Terry Brooks

What it’s about: This is the ideal book for someone just trying to get into reading or for those with short attention spans or little time. Known for his fantasy writing (even making it onto the New York Times Best Sellers list a few times), Brooks has included eleven short stories full of magic and adventure in this collection. Binge it all in one go or read a short story a night, whatever your schedule allows. Either way this novel will really allow you to dive into the depths of your imagination.
