Your Resolutions Should Be for Every Day, Not Just New Year’s

Bettering yourself is a full-time commitment.

As emotional beings, we love the sentiment behind a year’s end self-reflection and a discussion of what there is to (still) do better going forward. However, there’s a big misconception about this, it seems, in that our commitment to such resolutions it’s seen to be half-hearted or ill-considered once another year arrives. Only when the effort is made to better our choices in the present, as well as in the future, can we really know the importance of our progress.

Personally, I can’t remember the last time I thought about what I wanted to do for myself in this way. As a matter fact, I’ve never thought myself to be a very reflective person until this year, losing so much more every day to inconsolable differences, feeling as if gratefulness for anything I have would be selfish. For me, it’s taking more time than I’d like to make sense of what this will mean in the future, or whether our ties will survive once we’ve entered the new year.

Sometimes, even if we don’t like the prospect, it takes being faced with the inevitable to know what must be done so you can move on and be happy about your decisions. This work shouldn’t  only be limited to just before New Year’s Day. In fact, the longer you stay in the habit of rethinking your most important commitments, the easier it will become to trade a burden or bad habit for something that will help you mentally and prepare you for further change.

But like anything worth fighting for, nothing will succeed overnight, which will ultimately be what makes or breaks your dedication. In the same vein, you must consider what your life will continue to be if you do little to change what holds you back. It’s natural to feel anxiety while aspiring for greater change, and while the ebb and flow of the process won’t always be easy, it’s yet another step you can take on this lifelong road toward self-sufficiency.
