The New Year is rapidly approaching, bringing with it sparkling lights and rich colors. Though this year has been, and continues to be different than those past, the spirit of the holidays lives on through beauty. Whether you’re visiting family or staying local, this season is a great time to try out bold new looks and experiment with your most jaw dropping hues. Here, we’ve compiled five of our favorite makeup trends to try out this holiday.

Glitter, Glitter, Glitter

Glitter will always be a holiday makeup staple. Shimmering golds and silvers mimic tinsel, tree ornaments and gleaming menorahs, making glitter a classic go-to for the season. When tackling a sparkly shade of eyeshadow, choose a jaw dropping pigment for the eyelid and keep the rest of the look sleek and matte. A glittery lid pairs perfectly with black liquid liner, feathery lashes and a neutral lip.

Dark glossy lips

Reminiscent of mulled wine and holly, a dark glazed lip creates an instantly sophisticated look for holiday festivities. Consider swapping out traditional reds for rich plums, vampy cranberries and rich chocolates to elevate your look. Select a matte or satin finish lipstick for staying power, but don’t forget to swipe your favorite clear or similarly colored gloss over top to shine all night. For this look the lip will be the focal point of your face, so try selecting the rest of your makeup shades to complement your lipstick. Use neutral, cool-toned shadows for the eyes and consider a blush in the same color family as the lipstick.

Just a pop!

A single accent point can be stunningly impactful when it comes to makeup. There are so many ways to play around with this trend. One gorgeous idea is to apply a neutral eye with a sweep of bright color along the lower lash line -- try a deep crimson or pigmented glitter for a festive glam. Keep the rest of your look warm and soft with brown shadows and a natural flush.

It’s all about the lashes

Forget diamonds -- a good set of falsies is a girl’s best friend. False lashes are a powerful tool because of the sheer versatility. They come in dozens of styles, with effects ranging from a natural flutter to a feathered cat eye. Another great benefit of lashes is that they do most of the work for you; while you can still play around with the rest of your makeup, lashes automatically elevate the eyes and intensify your look. Try a pair with glitter, rhinestones or sequins for a fun holiday twist!

Au naturale

The holidays look a little different this year. Whether you’re spending the season alone, with your household or virtually, there’s nothing stopping you from pulling out all the stops with your look. However, this is also the year to take a break. With no holiday parties or New Year’s events, this is a great opportunity to give your skin the night off and settle in with a face mask and a feel-good movie.
