The temptation to gather with friends and family around this time is always strong, but especially right now, in a moment where sacrifices must be made to keep everybody safe. Whether you’re inviting a few people over or plan to be with others over Zoom, there are no limits to what can be done to make this holiday season all the more memorable. Here are a few activities that can bring everyone a little closer together through what can be a lonely time of year for many.

Cook a favorite dish

No matter what holiday you celebrate, nothing brings people together quite like great stories and a good meal with some festive beverages. Even if the most you’ll see of your family is through a group meeting online, you can still plan for it in new ways by cooking a family favorite that all will enjoy. If you want to step it up a notch, tell those who you’re seeing to do the same from where they are; that way, nothing has to be different, and everyone has some fun in the process.

Send a gift to a friend

While it’s difficult to think we may not be able to see those we love in person just yet, there are, unfortunately, so many out there who don’t have anyone to see this season. As an alternative to annual holiday cards, tell those people that you’re in their thoughts by gifting them something special, and your bond will surely hold on much stronger for it. If extravagances aren’t in your budget right now, plan ahead and save for a special excursion away, where you can recharge and make new memories.

Gather for a holiday movie

Even if you think you know what someone would enjoy most right now, you still can’t go wrong with classic entertainment. If not much is sparking inspiration to do more, simply hit record on a favorite Charlie Brown flick or stream a brand-new holiday original, like Happiest Season on Hulu or Christmas on the Square with Dolly Parton on Netflix. Then convene around the fire with some sweet treats for some much-needed downtime and a hearty laugh.
