Written by Kelly Carbone
With November coming to a close, many are already in the Christmas spirit. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of Hallmark movies sure to flood your screen (and let’s admit it, fun too). But before you embrace the hot cocoa and blast Mariah Carey from your speakers, don’t forget to say goodbye to all of fall’s best movies. Full of heart and scenes of beautiful fall foliage, these movies are the perfect ones to binge watch and bid fall farewell.
When Harry Met Sally
A cult (and personal!) favorite, When Harry Met Sally is the quintessential fall in New York movie. The story follows two strangers dynamic over the course of twelve years, as their relationship changes from foes to friends to maybe more. Full of iconic lines, New York City landmarks, and vignettes from real-life couples, it’s the perfect feel good movie to transition from fall to the holiday season.
Autumn in New York
This film is best watched with a box of tissues and a glass of wine. The movie centers around the relationship between Will Keane, a perpetual playboy played by Richard Gere, and Charlotte Fielding, a young girl dealing with a terminal illness played by Winona Ryder. The beautiful scenes of Central Park in the fall are aesthetically pleasing and the plot is sure to captivate all your emotions.
Remember the Titans
Perfect for fans of Friday Night Lights and When the Game Stands Tall, this football movie has both action and heart. Mainly focusing on the efforts of two head coaches in bringing a newly integrated football team to a winning season, this film tackles everything from racial tensions to family issues. It’s even based on a true story so you can’t help but get emotionally involved in each of the character’s storylines. Denzel Washington’s performance, as always, is amazing.
Good Will Hunting
With Robin Williams, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck as the main cast this movie is sure not to disappoint. The film largely focuses on Damon’s character, a smart but poor kid from Boston who’s a little rough around the edges, while also delving into topics like the impact of emotional trauma, class differences, and the act of self-sabotage. It’s emotionally raw without being clichè and is sure to keep the interest of even your most attentionally challenged relative.
You’ve Got Mail
This movie is the epitome of a sweet love story. Get prepared to feel all the feels as you watch Tom Hanks’ corporate businessman character unknowingly try to court the small bookshop owner whose store he just so happens to be destroying, all through the art of the email. It will take you back to a time when online dating was a little more wholesome than mindlessly swiping through shirtless mirror selfie after shirtless mirror selfie. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks’ chemistry is certain to give you all the warm fuzzy feelings.
Sweet November
This movie encompasses all the stages of falling in love with a twist ending. The month of November is a big thematic element of the movie (hence the title) so it’s perfect to watch as November comes to a close. Just make sure you have lots of tissues at hand because the ending is sure to leave you sobbing.
October Sky
October Sky, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Laura Dern, follows the story of a group of coal miners from West Virginia on their quest to learn rocketry. Based on a real story about a NASA engineer, this movie is great for those looking for a little inspiration and motivation.
