Kirby Drops Debut Album Sis.
The Memphis born songwriter and singer brings back the sound soul r&b.
The narrative of songwriter-turned-singer is pretty common in R&B and over the years we’ve gotten some good music from well-known writers. This road often traveled can be a tricky one but every so often a writer breaks through with a sound and vision completely unique and completely their own. That refreshing energy is exactly what KIRBY delivers with her solo debut album Sis.
In a time where R&B music consists of melodramatic sounds and electronic beats, KIRBY stepped onto the scene singing music she loved. Sis. is a soulful mix of funk and R&B blended with lyrics of love, lust happiness and heartache. The outcome is unique and fresh for R&B lovers craving a sound of music that seemed to have disappeared over the years. On the albums opening track, titled “Leon”, KIRBY tenderly coos about her love over soft electric chords and harmonies. The track feels soft, sweet and hazy like a humid summer day. It oozes with blackness and sets the tone for Sis., which continues with a modern sound rooted in soul and funk. As the album opens up, tracks like “Kool Aid” and “Velvet” take you back for a nostalgic 70’s-in-the-summer feel. Put simply Sis. is full of feel good music. It’s the kind of music you want to dance barefoot to in your living room but also cook Sunday dinner to. An easy going collection of melodies and song composition that comes together when a talented artist also happens to be a talented songwriter.
KIRBY is no stranger to the music industry. In fact, she’s been behind big hits for some of music’s largest artists. Originally starting her career as a songwriter, KIRBY penned tracks like “FourFiveSeconds” for Rihanna, Kanye and Paul McCartney and “Die With You” for Beyoncé. But even with hits like those under her belt, KIRBY had a desire for more. Stepping into the spotlight as solo artist she brings her unique voice and soulful style to a genre that seemed to have lost its sound. Sis. breaks the mold of today’s R&B songstress and embraces a sound of the past. But this is just the beginning for the KIRBY. The talented artists place has been solidified and she is already making waves as a new artist. Fans are already craving new projects and speculating artist collabs. At the moment we’re still enjoying the 7 track album but wouldn’t mind a feature project with fellow songstress Snoh Aalegra.
